The former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir doesn’t seem to have much competition as far as the post of the Indian cricket team’s head coach is concerned and most probably by the end of June 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India will announce him as the new head coach.
The former Indian cricketer WV Raman has also applied for the post and Cricket Advisory Committee has interviewed him along with Gautam Gambhir too but Gambhir has better chances because he is still active in cricket field (as commentator and mentor of IPL teams) and has a better understanding of challenges faced by players in modern day cricket.
As per the latest reports, Gautam Gambhir has laid down 5 conditions in front of the BCCI for taking up the job of India’s head coach and the first condition is that he should have full control over the cricketing operations and there will be no interference from the board.
The second condition that Gautam Gambhir has put forth is that he will select his own support staff including the batting, bowling and fielding coaches.
As per the reports, the third condition is related with the future of four senior Indian cricketers, Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that the Champions Trophy 2025 could be the last opportunity for Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami and if they are not able to make the team win the trophy, they would be dropped. However, it has not been made clear whether these players will be able to represent the team in red-ball format or not after getting dropped from limited overs team.
If reports are to be believed, the fourth condition is that Gambhir wants a separate team for test cricket and the fifth condition is that Gautam Gambhir will make a roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup from the very beginning.
It was already being reported that after the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will get away from T20I cricket and focus on ODIs and test cricket.
If Gautam Gambhir becomes the head coach, it is quite certain that he will take some unexpected decisions which may be a shocker for many but it seems that the Indian team needs such shockers as it has been more than 10 years that India hasn’t won any ICC trophy.
Let’s wait and watch how things proceed!
