Whatsapp is constantly dominating the global instant messenger market at present. No wonder why Mark Zuckerberg bought it. WhatsApp is the most popular instant messaging app in the world, it can be used to send things like text messages, images, video, audio messages – or even to place a Wi-Fi call to a friend. It has one billion active users, it handles 42 billion messages a day and 250 million videos. Facebook acquired it in 2014.
The only thing that this instant messaging app was lacking was the video calling feature. WhatsApp launched its much-awaited video calling feature earlier this week. While this feature made every WhatsApp user happy, when the spammers saw the feature, they wasted no time in developing a spam website and using the feature as a bait to trick many WhatsApp users.
The video-calling feature was introduced on November 15, and soon after the introduction of this feature, the WhatsApp users began receiving a link for the activation of the video calling.
If the user clicks on the ‘Activate Video calling’ link, he is taken to a website to enable the new feature.
“You’re invited to try WhatsApp Video Calling feature. Only people with the invitation can enable this feature”. This is what the spam message reads. And if you click the link, you’re taken to a website which looks very genuine. It looks very real, but is deceiving you.
When you click on the ‘enable’ tab, you will be redirected to a new page which requires user verification. The page would then ask you to share and invite four other friends to enable the feature.
The entire process can easily convince you to click on the links and share it with your contacts. But clicking on the links make you vulnerable to hacking.
The correct way to get the video calling feature in your WhatsApp is to update the WhatsApp version through Google Playstore or Apple Store. Once you have updated the app, the new video calling feature will be automatically enabled.
