The IPL match which was played yesterday between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, will go down in the history of the IPL as one of the most thrilling contests of the tournament in view of the fact that the decision of victory/defeat came on the last ball of the game.
More than 400 runs were scored in total 40 overs of the match and batters from both the sides ripped apart the opposition bowlers. The toss was won by KL Rahul-led LSG and it decided to bowl first but it didn’t get any benefit of winning the toss as LSG bowlers were not able to get any breakthrough till the 12th over since Virat Kohli (61 runs, 44 balls, 4 fours & 4 sixes) and Faf du Plessis (79 runs not out, 46 balls, 5 fours & 5 sixes) produced a partnership of 96 runs for the first wicket and then Glenn Maxwell also played a blistering knock of 59 runs (29 balls, 3 fours & 6 sixes) and helped his team in putting up a total of 212/2 on the scoreboard.
Chasing such a big total is never easy and things became more difficult when LSG’s top 4 batters failed in making any impact with the bat. There was a time when LSG was 105/5 in the 12th over but Marcus Stoinis (65 runs, 30 balls, 6 fours & 5 sixes) kept the hopes of his team alive and then Nicholas Pooran tore apart the RCB bowling unit as he scored 62 runs in 19 balls and his innings included 4 fours & 7 sixes. Things once again turned ugly for LSG after Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni (30 runs, 24 balls, 4 fours) got dismissed.
The last over of the match was bowled by Harshal Patel and it was not difficult for LSG as it only needed singles but things got problematic as it also lost two wickets in that over. The scores got tied with 2 balls remaining in the last over and RCB was thinking of taking the game into the super over.
Harshal bowled a short delivery to Jaydev and the batter took the aerial route in order to finish the match but he was caught by the RCB skipper Faf du Plessis. Avesh Khan came to bat after Jaydev’s dismissal and now LSG needed 1 run to win on 1 ball. Harshal Patel ran to bowl the last delivery but he saw Ravi Bishnoi going out of the crease at the non-striker end and Harshal tried to mankad him but he fumbled and was not able to remove the bails. Though he threw the ball on the wicket and it connected as well, run out didn’t take place.
Harshal Patel bowled the last delivery, though Avesh Khan wasn’t able to connect the ball with the bat, both the batters ran to take a bye. Dinesh Karthik, the RCB wicketkeeper, missed the chance to hit the stumps as he failed in collecting the ball in a clean manner and LSG pulled off a wonderful victory on the last ball of the match.

It won’t be wrong to say that the last over of this match was not for the weak-hearted and it was a very sad day for RCB as it couldn’t even defend such a big total.
