Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan recently opened up about his experience during Greg Chappell’s stint as the coach of the Indian cricket team.
According to the former all-rounder, Greg Chappell was very direct and often overly aggressive in how he handled players. Irfan Pathan explained that the coach treated seniors and juniors with equal expectations and did not hesitate to remind anyone that poor performance could lead to being dropped from the team. This approach, though rooted in merit, often created a sense of insecurity within the squad.
Irfan Pathan shared that he personally confronted Chappell about this issue. He recounted how he once spoke to the coach privately, telling him that constant reminders about being dropped were unnecessary since the players were already aware of the consequences of underperformance. This conversation initially agitated Chappell who reacted harshly but eventually he seemed to realise that Irfan Pathan had a point.
Chappell’s time with the Indian team is often seen as controversial, particularly due to his conflict with then captain Sourav Ganguly, which led to significant backlash and criticism. While several former players have spoken negatively about Chappell over the years, a few, including Irfan Pathan, have acknowledged that his intentions were genuine even if his methods were flawed.
Irfan Pathan believes Chappell wanted to implement a tough, results-driven environment similar to the Australian system and did not concern himself with players’ backgrounds.
However, Irfan emphasised that such changes need to consider the cultural context of the team. He gave a broader example, saying that if goes to coach a team, whether it is Bangladesh, Sri Lanka or England, he must adapt to the culture of the players in order to be accepted.
According to him, Greg Chappell’s intention to instill discipline and competitiveness was not wrong but it could have been handled in a more considerate and culturally aware way.
