The Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 consisted of 19 players (squad of 15 and 4 as reserves) and earlier it was decided that all the reserve players will remain with the squad for the whole tournament.
However, now the team management has decided that they will release Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan and send them back to India instead of taking them to West Indies. The reason behind this decision is the schedule of the Super Eight matches, India will be playing their matches on 20, 22 and 24 June and the second semi-final is on 27 June which India will play only if the team qualifies for it.
A source stated that the management decided to release the two players because there is very little gap between the matches because of which there is no chance of marathon practice sessions. The source further added that Khaleel is already there if the team needs a left-arm bowler for practice in the nets.
However, there are some reports which suggest that Shubman Gill has been released because of disciplinary issues as he was more concerned with his business commitments rather than fulfilling his obligations towards his cricket team. It is also being said that Shubman Gill has unfollowed skipper Rohit Sharma on Instagram because of the tensions that have erupted between the two. As of now, nothing can be said with confirmation in regard to these rumours but it is certain that Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan will return to India and they won’t go to West Indies with the team.
As far as India’s last league match which was against Canada is concerned, it was scheduled to be played at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium, Lauderhill, Florida but it got abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rains.
India and USA have proceeded to the Super Eight round from Group A and now all the teams which will play in the Super Eight will be heading to West Indies.
Well, is there any tension between Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma or is it just a rumour? What do you think?
