Indian cricket star KL Rahul has addressed the recent decision by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to release him after three seasons as the team’s captain. Following the IPL 2025 retentions, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka shared that the franchise aimed to keep players with a “team-first” mindset, a remark that many interpreted as a reference to Rahul. Responding to this, Rahul clarified that he was already considering a fresh start and is looking forward to exploring new opportunities in the upcoming auction.
Rahul, who joined LSG in 2022 and led them to two playoff appearances in his first two seasons, acknowledged that while he valued his time with the franchise, he is eager for a new beginning. Speaking to a sports channel, KL Rahul said that he is not aware of the comments but he expressed a desire to find a more balanced team atmosphere in his next franchise. He said that he wants to explore his options and play for a franchise which gives more freedom and the team atmosphere is also lighter as the pressure is already very high in the IPL.
In his remarks in an interview, Sanjiv Goenka explained LSG’s strategy to retain players who prioritise the team’s goals. He said that it was simple thinking as they wanted to retain only those players who have a mindset to win and they keep team first, adding that building a strong, team-oriented core was their priority. LSG retained Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, Ayush Badoni, Mayank Yadav, and Mohsin Khan, signaling a shift in their core roster.
The decision follows a season where tensions reportedly emerged between Rahul and LSG management. During a league match against SRH, Goenka’s visible on-field reaction towards Rahul drew attention and while they addressed the issue, it is believed to have impacted their working relationship. Rahul’s departure marks the end of a three-year association and he now heads to the auction pool, where teams will have the opportunity to bid on the seasoned IPL captain.
