Stephen Fleming is set to begin a new chapter as England’s men’s Test coach but former England captain Michael Vaughan believes the New Zealand great could face a major challenge that he never had during his highly successful stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Stephen Fleming joined CSK as a player in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before becoming the team’s head coach in 2009. Under his leadership, the franchise won all five of its IPL titles with MS Dhoni serving as captain. While Stephen Fleming was widely praised for his man-management skills, Dhoni was often regarded as the tactical mastermind behind the team’s success. Stephen Fleming also had the support of an experienced coaching staff, including bowling coach Eric Simons.
Michael Vaughan believes England cannot offer Stephen Fleming the same setup that helped him achieve sustained success with CSK. He said Stephen Fleming is highly respected for his coaching abilities and tactical understanding but pointed out that England do not have a captain like MS Dhoni, who played a huge role in running the team on the field during their IPL triumphs.
The former England captain also praised Eric Simons for his contribution at CSK, describing him as an outstanding bowling coach who focused on skill rather than raw pace. Michael Vaughan suggested that Stephen Fleming’s arrival could influence England to rely more on bowlers with control and swing instead of simply prioritising express speed in Test cricket.
Stephen Fleming’s departure from CSK came at a time when the England coaching role became available, with some believing that changing views within the franchise also contributed to his exit.
The former New Zealand captain will now work with Joe Root, who has returned as England’s Test captain in the absence of injured Ben Stokes. As Stephen Fleming begins his tenure, expectations will be high but Michael Vaughan believes recreating the winning formula he enjoyed with CSK could prove much more difficult without a leader like Dhoni at the helm.
