There has been a constant opposition of Goods and Services Tax (GST) from Congress and the party has even made up mind of boycotting the special midnight GST launch event in the Parliament.

Only few hours are left for GST’s rollout and Congress, to strengthen its resistance, has shared a couple of undated videos featuring Narendra Modi on Twitter. In the videos, Modi can be seen giving the statements which are against GST, like “GST can never be successful” and it is “impossible” to implement it in the absence of required infrastructure.

The first video that Congress has shared shows Modi saying,

“On the question of GST, it is the BJP’s view and the Gujarat government’s view, from the very beginning, that GST can never be successful.”

The video has been shared with caption, “This is what Modi ji & the BJP really think of GST #GSTTamasha” and we really don’t need to mention that this reflects the anger of the party over GST launch by the Modi govt.

In the second video that Congress shared with caption “Modi ji how quickly you forget your own words. Why are you rolling out GST without developing the proper infrastructure?”, Narendra Modi can be seen saying,

“GST can never be implemented until a country-wide IT infrastructure network of taxpayers is created… (It’s) impossible…because GST is designed in such a way. Impossible.”

As per PTI, Congress has already made it clear that it will not be present at the event of GST rollout, as the format of GST is “unacceptable” on its part.

As per Anand Sharma, the Congress leader,

“This is not a minor issue that the government will request and just few hours before the event a major opposition party will amend its decision. Keeping in mind Parliament’s decorum and country’s tradition, we have decided not to participate in the celebration.”

It was on Thursday that Ajay Maken, a Congress leader, told journalists in Delhi,

“GST in its present format will not only ruin small and mid-size businessmen, it will also create large-scale unemployment.”

Maken has said that the four–tier structured GST model suggested by the GST council is the “most disappointing” and “inefficient”. The GST council is being headed by the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley himself.

He further said,

“For an uncomplicated taxation system, the tax slabs under GST should not have been more than two. Many countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore, are operating under a reduced, single taxation system of GST.”
