Producer-director Karan Johar recently found himself at the center of yet another online storm, this time for doing what he does the best – celebrating cinema. The renowned filmmaker took to Instagram to share his heartfelt review of Saiyaara, a romantic drama produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by Mohit Suri.
Featuring fresh faces Ahaan Panday, nephew of Chunky Panday, and newcomer Aneet Padda, the film left Karan overwhelmed with emotion, prompting him to label the debut performances as “beyond magical”.
In his detailed post, KJo expressed how deeply the film had moved him. He admitted he couldn’t recall the last time he had felt such a strong mix of tears and joy after watching a love story on the big screen. Crediting the film for reigniting his passion for cinema, he thanked Yash Raj Films and producer Aashish Singh for bringing love back to Indian cinema. He praised Mohit Suri for what he called “the best film of his career”, highlighting the director’s talent for infusing music into emotion and narrative so seamlessly.
Karan Johar did not hold back when it came to the performances either. He applauded Ahaan Panday for his expressive eyes and ability to break and energise hearts simultaneously, declaring him a spectacular new talent to watch. Aneet Padda too received glowing praise for her nuanced portrayal, with Karan Johar commending her for conveying both vulnerability and strength through powerful silences. He also made special mention of the film’s technical brilliance, the editing team and casting director Shanoo Sharma for assembling such a stellar debut cast.

But amid the glowing review came the inevitable backlash. One troll lashed out in the comments, accusing KJo of once again championing nepotism by promoting a star kid, snarkily calling him “nepo kid ka daijaan” (nanny for nepo kids). The comment quickly caught fire but Karan wasn’t in the mood to stay silent. In a rare but fiery clapback, he responded, telling the troll to “chup kar” (shut up) and stop spreading negativity from the comfort of their home. He urged them to focus on the hard work of the young actors instead of trolling online, adding, “aur khud kuch kaam kar” (do some work yourself).
The exchange instantly went viral, with fans and followers divided between those praising Karan Johar for defending emerging talent and others continuing to raise the nepotism debate.
Saiyaara which hit theatres on July 18 follows the story of Krish Kapoor, played by Ahaan Panday, a passionate dreamer hoping to become a music icon, and Vaani Batra, played by Aneet Padda, an ambitious journalist trying to carve her space in the world.
