The 2014 released movie “Highway” was a major turning point in Alia Bhatt’s career, but very few people know that she wasn’t the first choice for the role of Veera. In an interview with a news portal, the director of the movie, Imtiaz Ali revealed that he initially imagined the lead character as an older woman rather than a young actress like Alia. However, his perspective changed completely after a meeting with Alia Bhatt at the screening of the film “Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana” (2012).
Imtiaz Ali talked about being struck by Alia’s warmth and emotional depth during their conversation. “Her emotional quotient was very high, and I felt compelled to talk to her,” said Imtiaz Ali. As their conversation deepened, touching on topics like home and society, Alia’s true voice came through. This encounter made him realize that the emotional intensity he visualized for Veera could indeed be captured by the young actress Alia Bhatt.
Imtiaz Ali confessed that he originally planned to cast an older actress, perhaps someone like Aishwarya Rai, whom he pictured as a perfect fit for Veera’s character without makeup. However, after meeting Alia, he never considered anyone else. “Aishwarya Rai without any makeup would have been a great choice, but I didn’t approach anybody else,” he admitted.

“Highway” is a powerful Bollywood drama that follows the story of Veera Tripathi, portrayed by Alia Bhatt. Veera is a young woman from a wealthy family who is unexpectedly kidnapped during a highway robbery. What starts as a terrifying ordeal gradually turns into a journey of self-discovery, as Veera finds an unexpected sense of freedom and peace in the very captivity she once feared.
Alia Bhatt delivers a career-defining performance as Veera, capturing her transformation from a sheltered, nervous girl to an open-minded and self-aware woman with stunning authenticity. Randeep Hooda, who plays her kidnapper Mahabir, also adds depth to his character, revealing layers of vulnerability beneath his tough exterior.
Alia was perfect for this role, agree?
