‘Phillauri’ Makers Are Asked To Mute ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ & You Won’t Believe Why

“Phillauri”, the second home production film of Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, is facing obstructions from the censor board. Anushka is playing the character of a friendly ghost in the movie which is a satire on superstition and shows an NRI guy tying knot with a tree after which the ghost stalks him. As per the rules and guidelines of CBFC, films must not promote superstition; nevertheless, it passed “Phillauri” with one cut and gave it the ‘UA’ certification.

In the words of Pahlaj Nihalani, CBFC chief,

“In my opinion it’s not the CBFC’s job to sit in judgment on the content of a film. We can only make amends in the presentation of the content. Not propagating superstition and blind faith falls in the jurisdiction of the State government. If we sat judgement over films on ghosts then we’d have to question why classics like Mahal, Gumnam, Woh Kaun Thi and Lekin were passed.”

However, the film’s producers have been instructed by CBFC for adding a detailed disclaimer in the beginning of the film, stating that they don’t believe in ghosts or any superstitious act shown in the movie.

In addition, Suraj Sharma’s recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa when the ghost was present with him has to be inaudible, as CBFC feels that it’s incompatible with the fact that recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa eradicates ghosts.

Here’s what a source revealed:

“This amounted to hurting of religious sentiments. The CBFC has asked for the Hanuman Chalisa to be removed from the soundtrack. All the audience will hear now is Suraj long droning chant which would be inaudible.”

Furthermore, it appears that CBFC is emotional for snakes too taking into consideration the fact that it has instructed makers for inserting a scroll in the scene in which a snake has been featured. The scroll will give the indication that the snake is made from computer graphics and no real snake is harmed.

Twitter instantly reacted to CBFC’s instruction and trolled it! Here are few selected tweets:
