Ravi Shastri Suggests This Major Change To Make ODIs Interesting & Appealing For Youth

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is currently taking place in India and the stadiums were completely packed in the matches in which India has played but if we talk about other matches, then the crowd in the stadiums was quite less. The future of ODI appears to be bleak as the young generation doesn’t seem interested in devoting 8 hours for a cricket match. The situation is bleaker in the bilateral ODI matches because of which Mark Nicholas, the next President of the Marylebone Cricket Club, has suggested that ODIs should be limited to the World Cup only.

Recently, the former Indian cricketer and former head coach of the Indian cricket team, Ravi Shastri appeared on Club Prairie Fire and spoke as to how the ODI cricket should evolve in order to keep youngsters interested in this format. In response to a question asked by the former Aussie cricketer Adam Gilchrist, Ravi Shastri said that when India won the World Cup in 1983, it was a 60-over each side game, it changed to 50-over each side and now it should change to 40-over each side as the attention time of the spectator is decreasing.

Ravi Shastri further says that nowadays youngsters buy tickets and wait for the toss, if their team bats first, they will rush to the stadium and stay till the first 10-15 overs of the second innings. He adds that if it is hot and India is batting second, then the Indian cricket fans will come at 5 pm, watch 10-12 overs of opposition batting and then watch their team bat.

He also emphasized on the need of revisiting and amending the laws in order to make the game interesting for the modern day cricket lovers and make it quick as well as reduce time wastage.
