Cricket fans witnessed a highly unusual run-out during India A’s opening match against Sri Lanka A in the 50-over tri-series in Dambulla on June 9. The bizarre incident involved Priyansh Arya, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, creating a moment that quickly caught the attention of viewers.
The drama unfolded on the final ball of the 13th over. Ruturaj Gaikwad guided a wide delivery from Ravindu Fernando towards deep point and the batting pair completed the first run comfortably. As they considered a second run, confusion set in between the two batters.

Priyansh Arya initially appeared interested in taking the second run but suddenly changed his mind and turned back. By then, Ruturaj Gaikwad had already committed and was well down the pitch. The miscommunication left both the batters scrambling toward the same crease, resulting in a race to see who could make it safely.
In a remarkable twist, both the players were almost the same distance from the crease and stretched their bats forward in an attempt to ground them first. At that crucial moment, wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella moved to collect the throw from the deep. While doing so, his foot accidentally blocked Priyansh Arya’s bat from reaching the crease.
The split-second obstruction proved decisive. Ruturaj Gaikwad managed to get his bat inside the crease just before Priyansh Arya. Realising both the players had ended up at the same end, Niroshan Dickwella reacted quickly and threw the ball to the opposite end, where the bowler completed the run-out.

Had Priyansh Arya’s bat not been stopped by Niroshan Dickwella’s foot, the outcome may have been completely different, with Ruturaj Gaikwad likely being the batter dismissed instead.
Such mix-ups can happen when players who are more familiar as opponents suddenly find themselves batting together. Until recently, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Priyansh Arya had been representing Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings respectively in the IPL.
The unfortunate dismissal ended Priyansh Arya’s promising innings at 32 runs from 32 balls. Despite the confusion, Ruturaj Gaikwad continued his knock and was batting strongly on 80 from 88 deliveries at the time of writing.
