Virat Kohli celebrating a century for India in an ODI match

Key takeaways

  • Kohli has 55 ODI centuries, the most by any batter, as of 12 October 2026.
  • He is the fastest to every ODI milestone from 8,000 to 15,000 runs.
  • He won 40 of 68 Tests as captain, the best record for an Indian captain.
  • He has ten ICC awards, more than any other player.
  • He retired from T20Is in 2024 and Tests in 2025, and now plays only ODIs and the IPL.

Virat Kohli holds the record for the most ODI centuries (55) and is the fastest batter to every ODI run milestone from 8,000 to 15,000. He is also India’s most successful Test captain with 40 wins, has ten ICC awards, and now plays only ODIs after retiring from T20Is in 2024 and Tests in 2025.

All numbers in this list are as of 12 October 2026 and count matches up to India’s third ODI against West Indies at Mullanpur on 3 October 2026. Test and T20I figures are final, because Kohli no longer plays those formats.

Virat Kohli career at a glance

Format Matches Runs Hundreds Best Status
Tests 123 9,230 30 254* Retired (May 2025)
ODIs 300 plus 15,000 plus 55 183 Active
T20Is 125 4,188 1 122* Retired (June 2024)

His exact ODI totals change with every match, so they are rounded above. Across the three formats he has 86 international centuries, second only to Sachin Tendulkar’s 100.

1. Most centuries in ODI cricket

Kohli has 55 ODI hundreds, the most by any batter. He became the first to 50 ODI centuries during the 2023 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, going past Tendulkar’s 49.

His 55th came on 27 September 2026 in Thiruvananthapuram, an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls against West Indies. As reported by Wisden, that innings had nine sixes, his most in a single ODI. You can see where he stands against other batters in our list of most centuries in ODI cricket.

Why it matters: No other active batter is close, so this record is likely to stand for years.

2. Fastest to every ODI milestone from 8,000 to 15,000 runs

Kohli has reached each 1,000-run mark from 8,000 onwards in fewer innings than anyone else. He also became only the second batter after Tendulkar to cross 15,000 ODI runs.

ODI runs Kohli’s innings When
8,000 175 2017
9,000 194 2017
10,000 205 2018
11,000 222 2019
12,000 242 2 December 2020, Canberra
13,000 267 11 September 2023, Colombo
14,000 287 23 February 2025, Dubai
15,000 303 27 September 2026, Thiruvananthapuram

For comparison, Tendulkar needed 300 innings for 12,000 runs, 321 for 13,000, 350 for 14,000 and 377 for 15,000. The one milestone Kohli no longer holds is 7,000: Kane Williamson got there in 159 innings in February 2025, two fewer than Kohli’s 161, while Hashim Amla’s 150 remains the quickest. Read more about the night he reached 15,000 ODI runs.

3. Most runs in a single ODI World Cup

At the 2023 World Cup in India, Kohli made 765 runs, the highest by any batter in one edition. He was named Player of the Tournament, even though India lost the final to Australia in Ahmedabad.

That tournament also included his 50th ODI hundred, which made the semi-final one of the most talked-about matches of his career.

4. Joint record for most List A centuries

The Thiruvananthapuram hundred in September 2026 took Kohli to 60 centuries in List A cricket, which counts all 50-over matches including domestic ones. As reported by Wisden, this equals Tendulkar’s record, and Kohli got there in 338 innings compared with Tendulkar’s 538.

5. Ten ICC awards, the most by any player

Kohli has won ten ICC awards, more than any other cricketer. The list covers both individual years and long-term honours.

  • Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (Cricketer of the Year): 2017 and 2018
  • ODI Cricketer of the Year: 2012, 2017, 2018 and 2023
  • Test Cricketer of the Year: 2018
  • Spirit of Cricket Award: 2019
  • Male Cricketer of the Decade (2011 to 2020)
  • ODI Cricketer of the Decade (2011 to 2020)

In 2018 he won the Sobers Trophy, the Test award and the ODI award in the same year, a clean sweep of the top three individual prizes.

6. India’s most successful Test captain

Kohli led India in 68 Tests, the most by any Indian captain. He won 40, lost 17 and drew 11. According to the ICC, his win percentage of 58.82 is the best among India’s Test captains.
