Kohli and Rohit are the only active players in this top nine, so only the top three positions can change in the near future.
1. Virat Kohli: 55 hundreds
Kohli scored his first ODI hundred, 107 against Sri Lanka, in Kolkata on 24 December 2009. He passed Tendulkar’s 49 with his 50th hundred, 117 against New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium on 15 November 2023.
Since then he has added five more: 100 not out against Pakistan in Dubai (February 2025), 135 and 102 against South Africa in Ranchi and Raipur (November and December 2025), 124 against New Zealand in Indore (January 2026), and 139 not out off 88 balls against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram on 27 September 2026.
The Thiruvananthapuram knock was his 10th ODI hundred against West Indies. It also took his List A hundreds to 60, level with Tendulkar’s record in all 50-over cricket. India chased 296 and won by eight wickets with 50 balls to spare.
Key fact: In that same innings, Kohli became only the second batter after Tendulkar to pass 15,000 ODI runs, and did it in 303 innings against Tendulkar’s 377.
2. Sachin Tendulkar: 49 hundreds
Tendulkar scored 49 ODI hundreds and 18,426 runs in a career that ran from 1989 to 2012. His first ODI hundred, 110 against Australia, came in Colombo on 9 September 1994. His last was 114 against Bangladesh in Mirpur on 16 March 2012, which was also his 100th international hundred.
Tendulkar played 463 ODIs, so his hundreds were spread over 23 years. Kohli needed far fewer innings to reach the same mark, and then went past it.
Key fact: He scored the first double hundred in men’s ODIs, 200 not out against South Africa in Gwalior on 24 February 2010.
3. Rohit Sharma: 35 hundreds
Rohit scored his 35th ODI hundred, 101 off 75 balls, against West Indies in Guwahati on 30 September 2026. In the same knock he crossed 12,000 ODI runs in his 290th ODI, joining Tendulkar and Kohli as the only Indians in that club.
He nearly made it two in a row, falling for 92 in the third ODI at Mullanpur on 3 October 2026. Before Guwahati, his most recent hundreds were 121 not out against Australia in Sydney (October 2025) and 138 against England at Lord’s (July 2026).
Against West Indies alone, Rohit now has four ODI hundreds and 1,746 runs in 39 matches. He also has 378 ODI sixes, according to figures published after the Guwahati match.
Key fact: Rohit has three ODI double hundreds, including 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, still the highest individual score in men’s ODIs.

4. Ricky Ponting: 30 hundreds
The former Australia captain scored 30 ODI hundreds in 365 innings between 1995 and 2012, along with 13,704 runs. His most famous one was 140 not out in the 2003 World Cup final against India in Johannesburg.
5. Sanath Jayasuriya: 28 hundreds
Jayasuriya changed how openers batted in ODIs in the 1990s. He scored 28 hundreds in a career that ran from 1989 to 2011, and was part of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup winning team.
6. Hashim Amla: 27 hundreds
Amla was South Africa’s most reliable ODI batter of the 2010s and scored 27 hundreds. That is the most ODI hundreds by any South African batter.
7. AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle and Kumar Sangakkara: 25 hundreds each
Three players are tied on 25. AB de Villiers holds the record for the fastest ODI hundred, off 31 balls against West Indies in Johannesburg in January 2015. Chris Gayle scored the first double hundred in a World Cup, 215 against Zimbabwe in 2015. Kumar Sangakkara scored more than 14,000 ODI runs and hit four hundreds in a row at the 2015 World Cup.
Most centuries in ODI by Indian batters
India has the top three century-makers in ODI history. Below are the verified totals of some of India’s leading ODI batters.
| Player | ODI hundreds | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Virat Kohli | 55 | World record |
| Sachin Tendulkar | 49 | Record holder until 2023 |
| Rohit Sharma | 35 | 3 double hundreds |
| Sourav Ganguly | 22 | Highest score 183 vs Sri Lanka, 1999 World Cup |
| Shikhar Dhawan | 17 | Retired in 2024 |
| Virender Sehwag | 15 | Highest score 219 vs West Indies, 2011 |
| KL Rahul | 9 | 9th came on 3 October 2026 |
KL Rahul’s ninth hundred was an unbeaten 129 against West Indies at Mullanpur, which took India to 351 for 7. Shubman Gill, who is also active, made 223 not out in the Guwahati ODI on 30 September 2026. His 200 came off 117 balls, the fastest double hundred in ODIs, and he became only the second batter after Rohit with more than one ODI double hundred.
Sourav Ganguly’s 22 hundreds were the most by an Indian after Tendulkar for a long time. Most of them came as an opener alongside Tendulkar, and his best was 183 against Sri Lanka at Taunton in the 1999 World Cup. Virender Sehwag’s 219 against West Indies in Indore on 8 December 2011 was the second double hundred in men’s ODIs, after Tendulkar’s.
What counts as an ODI century?
A century is any score of 100 or more in a single ODI innings. A double hundred counts as one century in these lists, not two. So Rohit’s 264 adds one to his total of 35, the same as a score of 100.
Only matches with official ODI status count. Domestic 50-over matches, such as the Vijay Hazare Trophy, are part of List A records, which is why Kohli’s List A total (60) is higher than his ODI total (55).

Not soon. The nearest active player is Rohit Sharma, 20 hundreds behind. Every other name in the top nine has retired.
