The Indian cricket team is currently going through a tough phase and they lost two test series consecutively, earlier the Indian cricket team got whitewashed by New Zealand in the 3-match test series at home and then they lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by 1-3. The senior Indian batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggled to meet expectations during the recently concluded five-match Test series against Australia which were part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Virat Kohli played all five matches but managed to score only 190 runs, while Rohit Sharma, featuring in three Tests, could only muster just 31 runs in five innings. India’s disappointing 1-3 series loss led to widespread criticism of the two stalwarts, with fans, former cricketers and analysts questioning their place in the Indian Test side and suggesting it might be time for them to step away from red-ball cricket.
Amid this wave of backlash, the former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh offered his support to the embattled duo. Yuvraj reminded critics of Kohli and Rohit’s past achievements, urging everyone not to overlook their significant contributions to Indian cricket. He emphasised that the two players have delivered exceptional performances over the years and deserve respect for their legacy.
During an interview, Yuvraj Singh said, “We are talking about our greats, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma; we are saying very bad things about them.”
He added, “People forget what they have achieved in the past. They are one of the greatest cricketers of this time. Okay, they lost; they did not play good cricket. They are getting hurt more than us.”
Expressing optimism, Yuvraj voiced his confidence not only in Kohli and Rohit but also in the new head coach Gautam Gambhir. He expressed hope that under Gambhir’s guidance, India would recover from this setback and regain its dominant form in Test cricket.
Yuvraj said, “I feel that Gautam Gambhir as a coach, Ajit Agarkar as a selector, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah are the best minds in cricket right now. And they have to decide what’s the way for Indian cricket in the future.”
Additionally, Yuvraj commended Rohit for his decision to drop himself from the Sydney Test, interpreting it as a bold move that reflected the captain’s self-awareness and commitment to the team’s needs.
The two World Cup winner said, “I think it is a big thing. I have never seen in the past that the captain’s form is not going well, and he himself has gone out. And this is Rohit Sharma’s greatness that he has kept the team ahead of himself. I think he is a great captain. Whether win or lose, he will always be a great captain. And in his captaincy, we have played the (ODI) World Cup final. We won a T20 World Cup. We have achieved a lot.”
