Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor’s highly publicised breakup in the late 2000s took an unexpected turn when Deepika, alongside Sonam Kapoor, appeared on the talk show Koffee With Karan.
Their candid remarks about Ranbir, laced with humour and personal jabs, quickly grabbed attention. Deepika playfully suggested that Ranbir should endorse a particular product, while Sonam questioned whether he would make a good partner. The comments, however, did not sit well with veteran actor Rishi Kapoor who was quick to express his disapproval.
Reacting to the episode, Rishi Kapoor dismissed the remarks as unnecessary and urged the actresses to focus on their careers rather than engaging in gossip on public platforms. He emphasised that in his own experience on the same show, conversations had been lighthearted and never at the expense of others. He expressed disappointment in the nature of the discussion and suggested that public figures should avoid talking about their personal matters in front of the audience.
Rishi Kapoor further pointed out that he is friend with Sonam’s father Anil Kapoor and did not wish to engage in conflicts involving his son’s friends. However, he felt their behaviour reflected immaturity and advised them to adopt a more mature and professional approach rather than relying on their family backgrounds to remain in the industry.
Despite the criticism, Deepika Padukone remained unfazed and stood by her remarks. She asserted that her comments were made in good humour and not meant to offend anyone. She highlighted the strong bond she shared with both Sonam and Ranbir, emphasising that as long as her friendship with Ranbir remained unaffected, she had no reason to be concerned about external opinions.
The episode stirred conversations about the fine line between humour and personal attacks in the entertainment industry. While some saw it as playful banter, others viewed it as an unnecessary airing of personal grievances. The incident remains a memorable chapter in Bollywood’s history, shedding light on the complexities of relationships in the public eye.
