Wanderlust can put you in a tight spot. As many places as there are to see in the world, there are double the ways to fleece you.
If you are on a shoe-string budget, and wish for a meaningful travel experience…
…Avoid these terrible tourist traps:
1. Times Square, NY, USA
An ocean of humanity and the blinding dazzle of neon signs, all at one intersection of roads. If you’re game for that, do visit!
2. Tower of London, UK
You’ll pay almost £25 for a single adult entry and stand in a long line to catch a glimpse of the famous Crown Jewels. There are way better things to do with your time and money.
3. St. Marks Square, Venice, Italy
Far from being romantic, it is only overcrowded and noisy, unless you visit in the wee hours of morning.
4. Dunn’s River Falls, Jamaica
Though the falls are undoubtedly beautiful, pesky tourist guides and hundreds of tourists, fresh off the cruise tours, are a complete eyesore.
5. Nanjing Dong Lu, Shanghai, China
History? Yes! Best shopping street in China? No!
You’ll pretty much find the same brands here you do everywhere else.
6. Venice Gondola Ride, Venice, Italy
A 40-minute ride costs around €80. If you are ready to pay that much for your dream to see Venice on a gondola, go ahead.
7. Empire State Building, USA
You’ll have to struggle through many tourists to have a view atop 86 stories. You can’t behold it very long, as you will be quickly ushered down the building.
8. Walt Disney World, USA
Unless you are a die-hard Disney fan or are accompanied by a child, this place will leave you feeling cheated at so many levels. Everything is overpriced.
9. Benoa, Bali, Indonesia
The place is fiercely advertised at a snorkeling haven. Don’t be fooled! The water is murkier than expected, and is almost fishless.
10. Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy
15 euros?! It’s a miracle that such a poor structure can last for so long, but you shouldn’t have to pay so much to get to climb it for a couple of mins.
