Perhaps you remember her as Harley Quinn- the badass villain who almost overshadowed the Joker- or the iconic scene of Margot Robbie with Leonardo Di Caprio from The Wolf of Wall Street- or maybe you are seeing her for the first time when the movie Barbie rose to prominence. Whatever the case may be, Margot Robbie has gradually made her place in the movie world.
Forbes named her in the list of Highest Paid Actresses and Time mentioned her in the list of 100 Most Influential People in the World. She has received two Oscar and four Golden Globe Awards nominations. All of these are an open testament to the actress’ success.
Here are the best Margot Robbie performances-
1. Suicide Squad/ The Suicide Squad
It is only right to begin the list with arguably Margot Robbie’s most iconic role- that of Harley Quinn from the DC Universe. She initially played it in the 2016 Suicide Squad movie and reprised her role in the standalone movie released in 2021. The latter underperformed at the box office but Robbie gave an impressive performance. From the former movie, you can gauge the actor’s potential as she transforms from the meek doctor to the badass and insane Harley Quinn, which we all frankly loved more.
2. Bombshell
One of the hardest and more sincere roles played by Margot Robbie, Bombshell touches upon the subjects that are harder to tell, and even more difficult to portray. Based on real-life events when the CEO of Fox News was accused of sexual harassment, the movie showed the account of those women who had to face the assault at the hands of their employer. Margot Robbie earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her character. Although the movie was a commercial failure, it was praised by critics for its portrayal of a sensitive topic.
3. The Wolf of Wall Street
Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street came as a breakthrough for Margot Robbie showing the enormous potential that the actress had. Featuring as the second wife of a corrupt stockbroker Jordan Belfort, Robbie gave a phenomenal performance in this black comedy. The story behind Robbie landing the role of Naomi is peculiar too. She slapped Leonardo Di Caprio during the audition which left the entire room shocked- that’s how she ended up with the role and the rest is history.
4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Revolving around the final days of the golden age of Hollywood, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood features an ensemble cast with Margot Robbie, Leonardo Di Caprio and Brad Pitt leading it. Margot Robbie stars as Sharon Tate, who was murdered along with six others by the members of the Manson Family. Robbie gave a stunning performance as she went through some crazy sequences in the film.
5. Mary Queen of Scots
Contrary to the roles Margot played as Harley Quinn and a few others, Mary Queen of Scots features Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth I. Although the major part of the screen time was taken by Saoirse Ronan, Robbie stole the show in the few scenes that she appeared in. Further, this movie demonstrated the range that she has the potential as an actor and that she is not someone to be taken lightly in the world of entertainment. Margot Robbie also received a BAFTA Award nomination for best supporting actress for her role- this being an open testament to the enthralling performance she gave.
6. I, Tonya
One of the hardest roles Margot Robbie had to take, I, Tonya shows Robbie as the controversial figure skater Tonya Harding. The biopic blends black comedy to present a mockumentary for the audience that will keep them hooked to the end, at least most of them. Harding was accused of assaulting a rival skater while the movie is based on the perspective of the story recalled by Harding and her ex-husband. Whether the movie is true or not, it is one of the most important roles of Robbie’s career to date. The movie also garnered Margot Robbie Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress.
7. Focus
One thing unique to Margot Robbie is that she successfully managed to steal the screen when she was working with seasoned actors like Leonardo Di Caprio and Will Smith, like in this movie. Focus follows Smith and Robbie as two hustlers, and while the movie was not a commercial success, the chemistry between the two lead actors was sensational. These early roles where Robbie stood out in everything that she starred in helped her to elevate her position in the film world. Today, she is recognized as one of the leading stars of Hollywood.
Conclusion-
Whether it is a black comedy, crime thriller, period drama, or even a biopic (which is often hard to play), Margot Robbie has proclaimed her position as a capable actor in the film industry. Her wide range of roles along with the nominations and acclaim she accumulated along the way openly displays her potential.
Her next big project alongside Ryan Gosling will be in Barbie. Directed and written by Greta Gerwig, who herself has made her name through projects like Little Women and Lady Bird, Barbie looks both a cheery and mysterious ride from the trailer- but one thing is clear Margot Robbie is ready to widen her potential as an actress and play even more diverse roles in her journey! The sheer comparison between her badass and cunning character in Suicide Squad with the bubbly and jolly look she took for Barbie displays her ability.
