The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has revealed the Indian Test squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand. Skipper Rohit Sharma will lead the side, while star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been appointed as the vice-captain, marking a significant leadership role for the bowler.
Jasprit Bumrah’s elevation to vice-captain follows his consistent performances with both ball and leadership qualities. Known for his ability to deliver match-winning spells and his resilience under pressure, Bumrah’s appointment comes after India chose not to designate a vice-captain during their recent series against Bangladesh. His promotion may hint at the possibility of grooming him for future leadership roles, possibly as a successor to Rohit Sharma.
Reports indicate that this decision could have immediate implications, with skipper Rohit potentially missing the first two Tests of the upcoming series in Australia due to personal reasons. In such a scenario, Bumrah could step in as the captain, a move that would allow him to gain valuable leadership experience.
India will host New Zealand for three Tests, with the first match scheduled to begin on October 16 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The second Test will be held at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, starting on October 24. The series will conclude at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, with the third Test set to begin on November 1.
Following the New Zealand series, India will travel to Australia for a five-match Test series starting on November 22 in Perth.
