It was a night to remember for Sunrisers Hyderabad, but one name that truly stood out was Sakib Hussain. On his IPL debut, the young pacer delivered a performance that instantly put him in the spotlight.
After Praful Hinge had already made headlines with a record-breaking opening over, Sakib Hussain added to the magic by picking up four wickets for just 24 runs. With these figures, he entered the record books, matching the best bowling performance on IPL debut, previously achieved by Ashwani Kumar.
Sakib Hussain made an immediate impact. In his very first over, he dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal to claim his maiden IPL wicket. Later, he returned in the 15th over and broke an important partnership by removing Rajasthan Royals’ top scorer Donovan Ferreira. He didn’t stop there. In the same spell, he went on to dismiss Jofra Archer and Ravi Bishnoi, completing a dream debut.
But behind this success lies a journey filled with struggle and determination.
21-year-old Sakib Hussain from Gopalganj, Bihar, did not have an easy start. Born in 2004 into a modest family, he faced financial difficulties early in life. His father, a farmer, had to stop working due to knee problems, which increased responsibilities at home. Interestingly, cricket was not his first dream. He initially wanted to join the Indian Army. However, his daily running routine revealed his natural pace and athletic ability, slowly pushing him towards fast bowling.
He began playing local tennis-ball tournaments, earning small amounts between ₹500 and ₹1000 per match. Though modest, this income helped support his family. His raw pace soon caught attention and with guidance from mentors like Mintu Bhaiya and coach Robin Singh, his skills began to develop.
A major turning point came when he played in Chandigarh and later in the Bihar Cricket League. His performances opened doors of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He further impressed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which brought him into the radar of IPL scouts.
Sakib Hussain also worked as a net bowler for Chennai Super Kings, where he impressed experienced players like MS Dhoni with his speed and discipline. Kolkata Knight Riders picked him in 2024 but he didn’t get many chances. It was Sunrisers Hyderabad who showed faith in him, signing him for ₹30 lakh ahead of the IPL 2026.
Known for bowling at speeds above 145 kmph and generating sharp bounce, Sakib represents a new generation of fearless Indian fast bowlers. His journey from small earnings to a grand IPL debut is not just inspiring, it’s a reminder of what belief and hard work can achieve.
