During an interaction, Aamir Khan recalled how Javed Akhtar once jokingly suggested a clever way to react when someone shows you a disappointing film. According to Aamir Khan, Javed Akhtar recommended using the phrase, “You’ve outdone yourself,” as a diplomatic response. The actor explained that the line could carry multiple meanings depending on how it is interpreted. While it may sound like praise on the surface, it could also subtly imply that the filmmaker has made films so poor that they have now surpassed even their own low standards.
Aamir Khan shared the anecdote in a light-hearted manner but also used the discussion to speak seriously about the importance of honest feedback in cinema.
The actor advised young and aspiring filmmakers not to become defensive during test screenings or audience previews. He said that the moment viewers sense resistance or insecurity from a filmmaker, they stop being truthful with their opinions. According to Aamir, constructive criticism may feel uncomfortable but accepting it is extremely important for filmmakers who genuinely want to improve their work before a film reaches theatres.
He emphasised that listening carefully to audience reactions can help creators identify flaws and make necessary changes, something that ultimately benefits the final product.
