In an industry where family connections are often considered a major advantage, many believe that having the right surname can guarantee a successful career. But for one actress, the reality turned out to be far more complicated. Despite being closely related to one of Bollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers and getting opportunities that many aspiring actors can only dream of, she struggled to establish herself as a leading name in the industry. Instead of enjoying a career-defining breakthrough, she became the target of intense online criticism that eventually pushed her away from the public eye.

The actress is Sharmin Segal, the niece of acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Sharmin Segal comes from a family deeply connected to the film industry. She is the daughter of Bela Segal, a renowned film editor who has collaborated on several major projects. Long before she stepped in front of the camera, Sharmin spent years learning the filmmaking process behind the scenes. She worked as an assistant director on notable films including Bajirao Mastani, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, and Mary Kom, gaining valuable experience on large-scale productions.

Her acting journey officially began in 2019 when she made her debut in Malaal, a romantic drama produced under Bhansali Productions. Starring opposite Meezaan Jafri, Sharmin Segal was introduced to audiences with considerable attention surrounding the project. However, the film failed to create a significant impact at the box office. While it marked the beginning of her acting career, it did not provide the breakthrough many had expected.

Following Malaal, Sharmin remained largely absent from major Bollywood projects. She returned to the screen in 2022 with Atithi Bhooto Bhava, sharing screen space with Pratik Gandhi and Jackie Shroff. Unfortunately, the film failed to generate widespread interest and did little to improve her standing within the industry.

Everything changed in 2024 when Sharmin Segal landed what appeared to be the biggest opportunity of her career. She was cast as Alamzeb in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s first web series. Released on Netflix, the period drama attracted massive attention both in India and internationally. The series featured a star-studded cast and quickly became one of the year’s most talked-about streaming releases.

However, while the show gained popularity, Sharmin Segal’s performance became a major subject of discussion online. Soon after the series premiered, clips from her scenes began circulating across social media platforms. Many viewers criticised aspects of her performance, including her expressions, dialogue delivery and overall screen presence. What began as criticism soon evolved into widespread trolling, with countless memes, parody videos and online debates dominating social media conversations.

The backlash also reignited discussions about nepotism in Bollywood. Some social media users questioned whether her family connection had influenced her casting in the series. Comparisons between her performance and those of co-stars such as Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha and Sanjeeda Sheikh further intensified the scrutiny.

As the controversy grew, Sharmin Segal became one of the most discussed personalities associated with Heeramandi. Ironically, the conversation surrounding the criticism often overshadowed her actual work in the series. In the months following the show’s release, she noticeably reduced her social media activity and public appearances, leading many to speculate that she had chosen to distance herself from the spotlight.

Despite the relentless criticism, Sharmin Segal avoided engaging in public confrontations with her detractors. Instead, she maintained that audiences are entitled to their opinions and have every right to evaluate creative performances. She emphasised that constructive criticism is an important part of an actor’s journey and acknowledged the role viewers play in determining the success of any project.

At the same time, she expressed that she had dedicated herself fully to the role and felt that positive feedback was often overlooked amid the negativity. While she admitted that the criticism initially affected her, she eventually chose to focus on the support she received from fans. According to the actress, she received numerous messages of encouragement and appreciation, which helped her navigate one of the most challenging periods of her career.

Her journey serves as a reminder that while industry connections may open doors, lasting success ultimately depends on audience acceptance. In today’s social media-driven world, public perception can shape a career just as strongly as talent, opportunity and family legacy.
