A wave of speculation has surrounded Rohit Sharma’s international future after several reports claimed that the Indian team management is ready to move in a new direction. Although there has been no official confirmation, reports suggest Sunday’s ODI against England at Lord’s could be the 39-year-old’s final international appearance for India.

Neither Rohit Sharma nor the Indian team management has commented on the reports. However, a video from India’s second ODI against England in Cardiff on Thursday has gone viral on social media, adding to the discussion.
The clip shows Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah with serious expressions. While the moment could simply have been a reaction to India’s batting collapse after being in a strong position, many fans have interpreted it differently. Several social media users believe the mood reflected Rohit informing his teammates that the Lord’s ODI could be the final match of his India career, though there is no official confirmation to support that claim.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had already announced their retirement from T20Is after helping India win the 2024 T20 World Cup and both also stepped away from Test cricket within a few days of each other.
Meanwhile, India men’s selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar was present in Cardiff, with reports claiming that the selectors are no longer looking at Rohit Sharma as part of their plans for next year’s ODI World Cup.

According to a PTI report citing a BCCI source, the selectors want to give Yashasvi Jaiswal an extended run in the ODI team. The source said India have around 20 ODI matches before the next World Cup, and the management wants Yashasvi Jaiswal to get those opportunities. The source also stated that while no one would ask Rohit Sharma to retire, the selectors are looking ahead to the future, beginning with the home ODI series against West Indies in September. The report added that the decision on Rohit’s future ultimately rests with the veteran opener himself.
Rohit Sharma has struggled in the ongoing ODI series against England, scoring only 37 runs across the first two matches, further fuelling the debate over his place in India’s plans.
