The incident happened during Saltburn Cricket Club’s second-XI match against Middlesbrough Cricket Club’s second-XI in the North Yorkshire and South Durham League. A video from the match appears to show the ball passing outside the bat of batter Noman Shabir without making contact. At the same moment, a slip fielder seemingly clicked his fingers, creating a sound similar to a faint edge, before wicketkeeper Josh Bowes completed the catch.

Many social media users believed the sound misled the umpire, who raised his finger and gave the batter out despite the footage appearing to show no contact between the bat and the ball.

The video quickly gained attention online, with several users calling it one of the clearest examples of cheating seen in club cricket. The original post described it as one of the worst cheating incidents in the sport and tagged well-known broadcasters and cricket personalities to highlight the matter.

The controversy grew further when Middlesbrough captain Rory Cotterill shared additional clips from the same match. He alleged that the same tactic was used on two more occasions, claiming that two young batters, aged 15 and 16, were unfairly dismissed. Rory Cotterill also said he was at the non-striker’s end during one of the incidents and only realised what had happened later. He added that Middlesbrough lost the match by 29 runs and expressed disappointment over the alleged actions.

Following the incident, the North Yorkshire and South Durham League confirmed that it has opened an investigation into the matter. The league said it would not make any further comments until the formal process is complete.

Hopefully the result of investigation comes out soon.
