After spending nearly four years away from international cricket, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back in the Indian team with a completely different mindset. The experienced pacer believes that staying in the present, avoiding expectations and focusing on his work helped him evolve as a person and return to team India.
The Meerut-born fast bowler returned to India’s T20I setup for the first time in almost four years and led the Men in Blue’s fast-bowling attack in the first T20I against New Zealand on Thursday, October 22. However, his comeback match did not go as planned, as he failed to take a wicket and conceded 49 runs in his four overs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has taken 90 wickets in 89 T20Is so far. He is likely to feature in India’s playing XI for the second T20I, scheduled to be played at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, October 24. Ahead of the match, the BCCI shared a video on X in which Bhuvi spoke about his return to the national team and the mindset that helped him during his time away from international cricket.
The 36 years old pacer said that representing the country is one of the greatest honours for any cricketer and he feels extremely happy to have received another opportunity. He explained that he is not putting pressure on himself by setting expectations and is instead concentrating on doing his job.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar added that this approach had worked well for him over the last three to four years. Although he had not played for India during that period, the experience helped him grow and become more mature as a person. He believes that living in the present rather than worrying about the future has been one of the biggest lessons he has learnt.

The fast bowler also credited his performances in the last two editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for playing an important role in his return to the national team. He revealed that he entered both IPL seasons without setting expectations for himself but that did not mean he took his preparation lightly. He worked hard on every aspect of his game, including fitness, skills and mental preparation, with the aim of contributing to his team’s success.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar admitted that although he wanted to help his team win, he had never imagined that things would work out so well, allowing him to win two IPL titles in two consecutive years. The pacer further revealed that he did not spend the last four years actively chasing a return to the Indian team. Instead, he focused on his work and personal development and the time passed before he even realised it. He also acknowledged the IPL’s significant role in his evolution as a cricketer and as a person.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return marks an important chapter in his career. Rather than putting pressure on himself to make a comeback, the experienced pacer focused on preparation, performance and personal growth. Now that he has another opportunity to represent India, he appears determined to continue with the same approach.
