Indian cricket witnessed a new record in women’s ODIs as Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal became India’s most successful batting pair in terms of partnership runs. The duo surpassed the long-standing record held by Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur during the first ODI against Zimbabwe on Friday, October 23.
Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal needed 94 runs to go past Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur’s record of 1,978 partnership runs. They achieved the milestone by putting together 94 runs for the first wicket in just 15.3 overs at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara.

The ongoing match marked the 27th time Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal had batted together for India in the 50-over format. With their latest partnership, the duo took their combined tally to 1,979 runs, making them India’s highest partnership run-scorers in women’s ODIs.
Before this achievement, the record belonged to Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur. During her playing career, Mithali, who remains the highest run-scorer in women’s ODIs, added 1,978 runs with Harmanpreet across 56 innings.
However, the world record for the most partnership runs in women’s ODIs across all wickets remains with Australia’s Lisa Keightley and Belinda Clark. The pair batted together 67 times and accumulated an impressive 3,339 runs.
Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal also came close to creating another milestone during Friday’s match. Had they added six more runs to their opening partnership, they would have registered their eighth 100-run partnership in ODIs. No Indian women’s batting pair has achieved eight century partnerships in the format so far.
The match was also special for Smriti Mandhana, as she was playing her first ODI as India’s full-time captain. However, her innings ended at 32 runs off 34 balls when she attempted a big shot down the ground. Beloved Biza took the catch off the bowling of Olinder Chare.
At the time of Smriti Mandhana’s dismissal, Pratika Rawal was batting on 58 runs off 59 balls. She reached her half-century in 54 deliveries, recording her ninth fifty in women’s ODIs.
The record-breaking partnership highlights the growing understanding between Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal at the top of the Indian batting order. With the duo continuing to deliver strong performances together, Indian fans will be hoping to see them set even more records in the future.
