Suryakumar Yadav’s rise in T20 cricket has been nothing short of spectacular. His fearless batting, creative strokeplay and calm confidence have made him one of the most exciting players in the format. Yet, behind the brilliance lies a quieter story, one of frustration and unfinished business in One-Day Internationals.
Despite being given several chances in the lead-up to the 2023 World Cup, Surya couldn’t quite find his footing in ODIs. While he continues to dazzle in T20s, even leading the Indian side in the format, it’s been two years since his last 50-over appearance. Recently, he opened up about his struggles to balance his approach between the two versions of white-ball cricket.
In a candid interview, Surya admitted that he often ends up treating ODIs like extended T20s, something that hasn’t worked in his favor. Wanting to learn from someone who mastered both the formats, he expressed a desire to speak with former South African great AB de Villiers whose batting brilliance in both ODIs and T20s remains unmatched.
Surya shared that he would love to understand how AB de Villiers managed to switch gears so effortlessly. He even sent out a friendly plea for advice, saying he’s eager to make the most of the next few years in his career and hopes to find that elusive balance.
AB de Villiers, the legendary cricketer, responded warmly. He said that he would take some time to prepare thoughtful advice for Surya, joking that he too has plenty of questions for the Indian star. Aware of the challenge of adapting between formats, ABD assured that he would “do his homework” before sharing insights that could help Surya bridge the gap.
The exchange between the two cricketers reflects not just mutual respect but also the shared struggle of modern players who juggle multiple formats. For Surya, this might just be the beginning of a new learning curve, one that could unlock the ODI success he has been chasing.
All the best, Suryakumar Yadav!
