The ODI match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh can easily be called one of the most controversial matches of cricket history as first Angelo Mathews was given a timed-out and then the players of both the teams didn’t even shake hands after the match.
Angelo Mathews is the first batter to get out in this manner and he minced no words in calling this act of the Bangladeshi team disgraceful. After Sadeera Samarawickrama got out, Angelo Mathews was the new batter on the crease but before he could take the stance, he saw that the strap of his helmet was broken so he asked for replacement from the dressing room.
The Bangladeshi skipper, Shakib Al Hasan went to the on-field umpires and made an appeal regarding timed-out and the umpires gave Angelo Mathews out. A timed-out takes place when a new batter is not in a position to face the delivery from the bowler within the required time period which is 2 minutes.
However, Angelo Mathews has argued that he was left with 5 seconds when he was given timed-out and he also tried his best to convince Shakib Al Hasan to withdraw the appeal but the Bangladeshi skipper didn’t agree. This incident has not only angered Sri Lankan cricket fans but also the family members of Angelo Mathews.
Trevin Mathews, the brother of Angelo Mathews, gave an interview to a leading portal in which he said that they are disappointed and the Bangladeshi skipper not only lacks sportsmanship but humanity as well. Trevin further added that Shakib won’t be welcomed at all in Sri Lanka and if he comes to play any international match or any LPL match, then stones will be thrown at him or he will have to face the anger of fans.
As of now, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are at the 8th and 9th positions, respectively in the points table and very soon both the teams will be leaving for home as they have no chance of playing the semi-finals.
