The voting for Lok Sabha elections 2019 is currently going on in India and not just common people but the celebrities are also making sure that they cast their vote. While many famous celebs and Bollywood actors got clicked by the mediapersons after they casted their vote, there was one actor who was missing from the voting scene.
Yes, you guessed it right! We are talking about the film industry’s action hero Akshay Kumar who has been associated with many noble causes, some of which are related to Indian Defense Forces and the welfare of the families of martyrs.
It is no secret that Akshay has taken Canadian citizenship and as per the Indian law, he needs to give up Indian citizenship as the Indian Constitution doesn’t allow Dual citizenship. This makes him ineligible to vote in India and one section of online users was pretty angry with him on this matter as they don’t like someone preaching them on various issues while he himself holds citizenship of another country.
The controversy further got escalated when a reporter asked Akshay as to why he did not take part in voting and instead of giving a proper reply, Akshay decided to avoid him. This further angered social media users and Akshay was forced to make a statement on his social media account in this regard.
He wrote,
“I really don’t understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years. I work in India, and pay all my taxes in India. While all these years I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political and of no-consequence to others. Lastly, I would like to continue contributing in small way to the causes that I believe in and make India stronger and stronger.”

While some still slam him for giving up Indian citizenship, there were few who supported him including his “Baby” co-actor Anupam Kher.
Anupam Kher took to the micro-blogging site Twitter and wrote, “Dear @akshaykumar! Have been reading about you explaining to certain people about your loyalty to our country. Stop it! Their real profession is to make people like you & me feel defensive for talking in favour of India. You are a doer. You don’t need to explain to anybody.👏🇮🇳”
