Let’s travel back to 1981, when , Manjula Vaghela started her work as a rag-picker, the one who finds reusable items from heaps of dirt and wastage. But now, after 34 years she is no more rag-picker, but heads a firm that has 400 dedicated workers,paving way for a clean and better society.

Manjula has truly worked hard, and is a prime example to set for the story of Rags to Riches. She has redefined the phrase of “Work hard towards the thing you love”. Her story is simply, awe-inspiring for a nation that is coming out of age and breaking the stereotypes regarding women. She founded the firm, hri Saundarya Safai Utkarsh Mahila Sewa Sahkari Mandali Ltd. (SSSUMSSML) with only 40 women and now this firm yearly has a turnover of Rs.1 crore.

SSSUMSSL provides cleaning and housekeeping services to various institutions and societies in Ahmedabad. But Manjula also drew her inspiration after she met Elaben Bhatt, the founder of self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA). A group with 400 women, were mostly rag pickers previously, and today they are equipped with almost all new sorts of gadgets that helps and eases them in the cleaning process.

Today at the age of 60, she is a proud mother of a doctor son.
