What began as a thrilling cricket contest ended with tempers flaring as young Indian batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi found himself at the center of a heated on-field confrontation during a tri-series match against Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Monday.

The match produced high drama from start to finish. After 99.2 overs of intense cricket, neither side could be separated. Sri Lanka A needed two runs from the final ball of their innings but failed to get them, finishing at 265/9 and forcing the game into a Super Over.
The hosts made a strong start in the tie-breaker, scoring an impressive 18 runs in their allotted over and setting India A a target of 19. During the chase, Suryansh Shedge faced the first three deliveries, leaving India needing 14 runs from the final three balls with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on strike.
Sri Lankan pacer Kugathas Mathulan immediately put pressure on the youngster with a perfectly executed yorker that restricted him to just two runs. The equation then became 12 needed from two balls. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi responded with a boundary off the next delivery, briefly raising hopes of a dramatic finish.
However, India still required eight runs from the final ball. Mathulan delivered another excellent yorker, angled wide outside off stump, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi failed to make contact. The missed shot sealed Sri Lanka A’s victory and sparked emotional celebrations from the home side.

Moments later, the atmosphere turned tense. As Sri Lankan players celebrated, both Suryansh Shedge and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi were seen exchanging words with several opposition players. The confrontation quickly escalated, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi appearing to shove one of the Sri Lankan cricketers before another player stepped in to separate those involved.

According to reports, repeated verbal remarks from the Sri Lankan players throughout the match contributed to the youngster’s frustration. A video circulating on social media reportedly shows several players approaching and speaking to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi immediately after the final ball. Some reports have also claimed that remarks comparing the match to the IPL were directed at the teenager, similar to comments he reportedly faced during the Under-19 Asia Cup last year.

The incident serves as another reminder of the challenges that come with fame. At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already attracted global attention due to his impressive IPL performances. As his profile continues to rise, opposition teams are likely to target him both competitively and mentally.
While many cricket greats, including Virat Kohli, have used such intensity as motivation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may need to channel those emotions more calmly in the future. Responding through performances rather than confrontation could prove crucial as he continues his rapid rise in the game.
