Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan has always been a name of controversies. A judgement on his 15 year old case was passed today and the self style God Man was declared guilty of molesting his own female follower.
Soon after the judgement was passed, his followers started protesting and creating riots in Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and even Delhi. Lakhs of followers had collected in Chandigarh and as soon as the decision went against Ram Rahim, they did what they had come to do.
But a question arises that, how this man became so much popular and managed to make people so obsessed with him. Let’s have a look at his story.
Born – 15 Aug 1967
He was born to a Jaat Sikh family in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. His father’s name is Maghar Singh and mother’s name is Nasib Kaur. His name was Gurmeet Singh initially.
1974
When Gurmeet Singh was 7, he became a follower of Dera Sacha Sauda which was established by Sant Mastana Ji in 1948.
A few years later
Gurmeet Singh was amazing in sports but couldn’t continue his study after 9th standard. He left his studies in 10th standard.
After dropping out from school
After leaving the school, his parents got him married. He was blessed with three kids, a son and two daughters.
1990
He continued to work in Dera even after marriage and dropping out of school. He became very close to Shah Satnam Singh Ji(the guru of that time) who made him the next chief of Dera in year 1990. So Baba Ram Rahim Singh got the post of chief from his predecessor Sant Satnam Singh Ji.
Post 1990
As the Dera Sacha Sauda chief, he did a lot of social work. His work for the society was loved by people especially the work to bring the people of all classes together. He ran several blood donation campaigns and tree plantation campaigns. He was instrumental in making lakhs of people leave the habit of alcohol and drugs, something which multiplied his followership and made people crazy for him.
2002
In 2002, he was alleged with rape charges from one of his own female followers. She alleged that Gurmit Ram Rahim sexually assaulted her along with many other female followers.
2007
In 2007, he was alleged for hurting the sentiments of Sikh community by wearing an attire just like the one of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10th guru of Sikhs.
The Dera Sacha Sauda had to apologise for it. A case was filed against him, for hurting the Sikh sentiments but it was dismissed by the Sirsa court in 2009 and Bathinda court in 2014.
2012-2014
He continued his social work and also experimented with songs. A song “Love Charger” by him became very popular among people. While his followers loved the new side of their guru, other people criticised it.
2015-2017
In 2015, he made a debut in films as an actor. His films MSG, MSG 2, MSG Lion Heart, MSG Lion Heart 2 and Jattu Engineer released back to back in these 3 years.
25th Aug 2017
A historic decision was made by the Panchkula court regarding the long pending 2002 rape case against him. He was declared a guilty by the court and his supporters created riots disturbing the peace of a large part of North India.
