A new king of T20 cricket has been crowned. On Wednesday, August 5, England’s Jos Buttler created history in The Hundred. Playing for Manchester Super Giants against Welsh Fire at Old Trafford, Manchester, he became the highest run-scorer ever in T20 cricket.
Before the match, Jos Buttler needed just 22 runs to go past Kieron Pollard’s record of 14,803 runs. He did it in style, smashing an unbeaten 51 off just 20 balls. He broke the record on the 62nd ball of the chase while his team was chasing 156.
This was Jos Buttler’s 522nd T20 match and with this knock, he now has 14,833 runs in 492 innings.
With this, Kieron Pollard has slipped to the second place. The former West Indies captain has 14,803 runs in 663 innings from 746 matches. Interestingly, Kieron Pollard himself had broken Chris Gayle’s long-time record earlier this year.
Chris Gayle is now third on the list with 14,562 runs in 463 matches. He is followed by Alex Hales with 14,449 runs and David Warner with 14,284 runs.
Jos Buttler’s T20 career has been amazing. He led England to the T20 World Cup title in 2022. He has scored 4,212 runs in 160 T20Is for England and 1,192 runs in 31 Hundred matches. In the IPL, he has played for three teams – Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans – and scored 4,646 runs with 7 centuries and 28 half-centuries.
His latest fifty was also a match-winning one. Manchester Super Giants chased down the 156-run target in just 69 balls with 9 wickets in hand.
Jos Buttler is in red-hot form this season. He has scored four fifties in six matches for Manchester Super Giants and has 277 runs in total, making him the second highest run-scorer of this year’s tournament.
That fourth fifty also helped him equal a Hundred record. He has now equaled the record for most 50-plus scores in a single season of Men’s Hundred. Before him, only Dawid Malan and James Vince had scored four 50-plus scores in one edition.
