Former India fast bowler S Sreesanth has sparked a fresh discussion in the cricketing world after making strong remarks about team India head coach Gautam Gambhir. The former pacer questioned whether the current coaching setup is the right fit for the national team and argued that India needs a mentor figure like MS Dhoni rather than a conventional coach.
Speaking during a recent interview, Sreesanth emphasised the importance of leadership and player management at the highest level of the game. He suggested that successful teams are built around trust, confidence and strong relationships between players and management. According to him, international cricketers need guidance from someone who understands how to inspire players rather than simply instruct them.
The discussion reportedly began when Sreesanth was asked about India’s recent struggles in Test cricket, particularly disappointing results at home against teams such as New Zealand and South Africa. Before the question was fully completed, he reportedly pointed toward the coaching setup and questioned whether the current leadership was helping the team move in the right direction.
Sreesanth went on to argue that international teams require mentors who can bring out the best in players rather than coaches who focus heavily on systems and structures. While clarifying that he is not against coaching as a profession, he said that the role of a mentor becomes more important when dealing with experienced international players.
The former World Cup-winning pacer also expressed concerns about what he believes is an overly demanding coaching environment. According to Sreesanth, players should not feel that a poor performance could immediately put their place in the team at risk. Instead, they should be given confidence and backing, especially during difficult phases of their careers.
To support his point, Sreesanth cited the example of former India captain MS Dhoni. He praised Dhoni’s leadership style, highlighting the confidence and freedom he gave his teammates. According to Sreesanth, Dhoni’s ability to trust players and create a positive dressing-room atmosphere played a major role in India’s success during his captaincy.
Sreesanth also questioned the tendency to give excessive credit to coaches for major tournament victories. Referring to India’s T20 World Cup triumph, he argued that players ultimately decide matches on the field. He specifically mentioned the contributions of players such as Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav, while also highlighting the importance of key bowling decisions made during crucial moments of the tournament.
According to Sreesanth, championships are won through performances under pressure, smart decision-making and contributions from players across the squad. While coaches and support staff certainly have an important role, he believes the spotlight should remain on the cricketers who execute plans on the field.
