Have you ever wondered what happens to the twitter account of Us President, when they leave their office? Well, this question could surely never cross your mind before as Barack Obama was the first US president on Twitter, but he won’t be the last. So what happens to the Presidential Twitter account ” @POTUS ” after the election?
What happens to the millions of tweets and 11 million followers that the president earned over the 8 years? Obama’s was the first official to embrace social media, launching a booming online presence that covers Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumble, Medium and other platforms, but will POTUS 45 have the same massive social media following even after Obama?
Officials have decided when Obama leaves office on Jan. 20, 2017, Twitter will transfer his tweets to the new account @POTUS44.
The account will contain all of his 317 earlier tweets which will be archived by the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) under the new handle of @POTUS44. NARA will also collect the earlier official’s other Twitter, Facebook and Instagram profiles (like @WhiteHouse, @FLOTUS, @PressSec, and @VP) under similar Barack Obama -related handles.
The most popular tweet of President Obama;
The 45th US president will receive the handle @POTUS45, with a clean slate without the previous @POTUS tweets.
As for Facebook and Instagram, the White House username, URL, and followers will be owned by the new president. The same pattern will follow for the vice president and first lady’s social media accounts. Other digital projects, like WhiteHouse.Gov and petition platform “We The People”, will have their content archived by NARA but will be made available for the future office holders.
Another interesting addition could be seen if Hillary Clinton is elected as the president, Bill Clinton will likely be called the “first gentleman of the United States”, with the account of the account @FGOTUS, an account that has never been activated as if elected then Hillary would be the first woman president of United States.
This shift of digital power has been much debated and put forth to both the contesting parties, however neither Neither Hillary Clinton’s nor Donald Trump’s campaign responded to this digital shift.
