Lionel Messi once again proved why he is regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history by delivering a sensational hat-trick in Argentina’s opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Argentine captain inspired the defending champions to a commanding 3–0 victory over Algeria in their Group J clash at Kansas City Stadium, producing a performance that will be remembered for years to come.
At 38 years old and playing in a record sixth FIFA World Cup, Lionel Messi showed that age is merely a number. The legendary forward scored all three goals for Argentina in the 17th, 60th and 76th minutes, leaving fans, teammates and opponents in awe of his brilliance. His first goal came from a powerful strike outside the penalty area, while the second was a classic poacher’s finish after reacting quickest to a rebound. He completed his hat-trick with a trademark finish following a slick attacking move.
The achievement was historic on multiple levels. The hat-trick was Lionel Messi’s first ever in a FIFA World Cup match and took his tally to 16 World Cup goals, drawing him level with Germany legend Miroslav Klose as the joint highest scorer in men’s World Cup history. Messi also became the oldest player ever to score a World Cup hat-trick, adding yet another remarkable record to his already extraordinary career.
Argentina entered the tournament as one of the favorites to retain the trophy they won in Qatar in 2022. However, questions had been raised about whether Lionel Messi could still dominate on football’s biggest stage. Against Algeria, he answered those doubts emphatically. Beyond his goals, Messi displayed energy, creativity, leadership, and relentless determination throughout the match, demonstrating that he remains the heartbeat of the Argentine national team.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised his captain after the match, describing him as “incredible” and highlighting his continued importance to the squad. Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul and other teammates also celebrated Lionel Messi’s performance, emphasising the inspiration he provides both on and off the field.
The victory gives Argentina a perfect start to their World Cup campaign and sends a warning to the rest of the tournament. With Lionel Messi in such dazzling form, the reigning champions look capable of making another deep run toward the final. The football world now eagerly awaits Argentina’s next group-stage match against Austria, where Messi will have the opportunity to surpass Miroslav Klose’s record and become the outright leading scorer in World Cup history.
