What should have been remembered as a thrilling cricket contest turned into one of the most talked-about matches of the tri-series after a series of controversial incidents overshadowed the action in Dambulla.
The one-day match between India A and Sri Lanka A ended in a tie, forcing the game into a Super Over to determine the winner. However, the drama had already begun before the eliminator started. Reports suggested that fading light conditions and a delay in Sri Lanka A’s arrival for the Super Over frustrated members of the India A camp, creating tension between the two sides.
The situation escalated further during and after the Super Over. A verbal exchange reportedly took place between Sri Lankan player Vishen Halambage and 15 years old Indian batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The youngster eventually lost his temper and appeared to shove the Sri Lankan cricketer, leading to a heated confrontation on the field.
The match also generated debate over some officiating decisions. One of the most discussed moments came when a waist-high full toss from Arshad Khan was ruled a no-ball by the TV umpire. The decision divided opinions and added to the growing frustration surrounding the contest.
There was another confusing moment during the Super Over when Avishka Fernando was caught while attempting an attacking shot. Believing the over had ended, several Indian players began walking back towards the dressing room before being called back to complete the final delivery.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin later reacted to the incident on social media. He noted that matches at this level do not always have the same level of technological coverage seen in the IPL, making certain decisions harder to assess. He also pointed out that the no-ball call was open to debate and acknowledged that the delay before the Super Over appeared to irritate the Indian players.
At the same time, Ashwin suggested that Sri Lanka’s actions could be viewed as tactical mind games, while India’s frustration was understandable given the circumstances. He described the entire sequence of events as highly dramatic and entertaining from a spectator’s perspective.

The No Ball call in the super over was debatable and the way Sri Lanka delayed coming into bat in the super over really irked the India A side. Earlier in the match, India A were bowled out for 265. Sri Lanka A managed to level the scores despite appearing to be in a strong position during the chase. In the Super Over, Sri Lanka A set a target of 17, and India A could only manage 9 without losing a wicket, handing the hosts victory in a match that will be remembered as much for its controversy as its cricket.
