Dravid is one of the most respected figures in Indian cricket and has enjoyed success both in the IPL and at the international level, including guiding India to a T20 World Cup title as head coach. Despite his vast experience, Dravid is known for embracing modern coaching methods. His emphasis on detailed planning, data analysis and structured preparation could introduce a new approach at CSK while maintaining the team’s strong culture.
2. Hemang Badani:
Former India cricketer Hemang Badani has emerged as one of the names linked with the CSK coaching role. He served as the head coach of Delhi Capitals over the past two seasons, although the team was unable to secure a playoff berth during his tenure. Reports also suggest that changes in Delhi Capitals’ management could leave Hemang Badani available ahead of the 2027 season. His coaching experience extends beyond the IPL, giving him valuable exposure in different cricketing environments. He is also considered as someone who understands Indian domestic talent well.
Hemang Badani has previously made headlines for his views on Stephen Fleming’s success at CSK. In a 2024 YouTube interview with Yo Mahesh, he questioned Fleming’s coaching credentials outside the IPL and credited much of CSK’s success to MS Dhoni, saying that Mahi had been the franchise’s central figure.
3. Dinesh Karthik:
Another name reportedly under consideration is former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik. Currently associated with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as their mentor and batting coach, DK has gained valuable coaching experience while working alongside head coach Andy Flower.
He also brings strong leadership credentials, having captained Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket. His local connection could further strengthen CSK’s bond with fans in the state. Adding someone with Dinesh Karthik’s experience and understanding of modern T20 cricket could provide CSK with a fresh perspective as they look to rebuild.
4. Ravichandran Ashwin:
Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin may be an unconventional choice but he remains an interesting candidate for the role. Ashwin has IPL captaincy experience, is considered a CSK legend and has openly expressed his desire to move into coaching after his playing career.
Speaking after the ETPL player draft, Ashwin revealed that he has already taken on coaching responsibilities alongside captaincy in state cricket over the past few years. He also mentioned that Rahul Dravid had confidence in his leadership abilities, reinforcing his interest in transitioning into coaching full-time. While appointing Ashwin may be a long-term investment, it could help CSK build a fresh coaching structure for the future.
5. MS Dhoni:
When discussions begin about CSK’s future, it is almost impossible to ignore MS Dhoni.
For years, Dhoni has been viewed as the heart of the franchise. Even while continuing as a player, many believe he has already taken on responsibilities that closely resemble those of a coach by mentoring younger players and influencing important decisions within the team. If CSK decides to formally hand him the coaching role after his playing career, it would be a natural progression for one of the greatest figures in the franchise’s history.
Stephen Fleming’s departure marks the end of one of the most successful coaching tenures in IPL history. Replacing someone who helped deliver five IPL championships and worked closely with MS Dhoni for 18 years will not be an easy task.
