England’s preparations for the second Test against New Zealand have been overshadowed by an off-field controversy involving captain Ben Stokes and all-rounder Gus Atkinson. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has launched an investigation into what it describes as a serious breach of team protocols following an incident at a London nightclub.
The alleged incident took place during the early hours of Monday at Rex Rooms, a venue located on King’s Road in London. Reports suggest that Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at the nightclub after England celebrated their victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s. Members of Saracens Rugby Club, who were holding end-of-season celebrations at the same venue, were also reportedly involved.
According to reports, tensions escalated after a disagreement broke out between Gus Atkinson and an unnamed Saracens player. During the altercation, a punch was allegedly thrown at the England all-rounder. However, the blow reportedly struck an ECB security guard instead, leaving him injured and requiring stitches.
While neither Ben Stokes nor Gus Atkinson was physically harmed, uncertainty remains over how the situation unfolded after the security guard was injured. The ECB has not disclosed further details as investigations continue.
The controversy comes at a particularly sensitive time for England. Gus Atkinson played a significant role in the first Test victory, claiming a five-wicket haul in New Zealand’s second innings, as England secured an impressive 115-run win. However, both he and Ben Stokes could now face consequences that may affect their availability for the second Test, scheduled to begin on June 17 at The Oval.
In its official statement, the ECB confirmed that it is gathering information regarding the alleged breach of team protocols. The governing body stated that both the players were present when the incident occurred, adding that the Cricket Regulator has been informed. A decision regarding England’s squad for the upcoming Test will be announced once the investigation progresses.
Saracens also acknowledged the matter, confirming that an academy player connected to the club was involved in an incident on Sunday evening.
The situation has renewed attention on England’s disciplinary standards. Earlier this year, the ECB introduced a midnight curfew for players and staff following a disappointing tour of Australia, where off-field behaviour became a major talking point. During that tour, vice-captain Harry Brook was fined after an altercation with a bouncer, while Jacob Bethell received a formal warning.
With a crucial Test approaching, England now faces an unexpected distraction as the investigation continues.
