June 30 Will Have An Extra Second. But Why…?

The month of July would momentarily be delayed due to the leap second. (the extra second which’s being added to the month of June is called leap second).  But why is it necessary to add just one second and how significant is it?

Without leap seconds, there would come a day when time would drift so much that  mornings would seem afternoons and afternoons as nights. This happens due to the irregularities in the earth’s rotation.

The last planed leap second was observed in June, 2012. A leap second is usually added to UTC (Universally Coordinated Time), so that we can keep time close to mean solar time.
The first leap second was observed in the year 1972.
