The cricket teams of England and India will be facing each other in the 5-match test series starting 20 June and both the teams will like to start their new WTC cycle on a positive note by winning the series. While Shubman Gill will start his captaincy career with the first test which will be played at Headingley Cricket Ground, the England cricket team will be led by the experienced skipper Ben Stokes.
As England prepares to host India in the much-anticipated five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, former England captain Nasser Hussain has drawn an impactful comparison between the current skipper Ben Stokes and legendary Mike Brearley.
According to Nasser Hussain, Ben Stokes possesses the rare ability to strike a perfect balance in leadership, combining emotional intelligence with tactical skills, making him the heartbeat of this English side.
Nasser Hussain, writing in a leading publication, emphasised how Ben Stokes stands out as a leader who commands both respect and camaraderie. He noted that while many captains fall short of checking every leadership box, Ben Stokes comes remarkably close. He likened Ben Stokes to Mike Brearley for his intuitive grasp of dressing-room dynamics. Teammates are inspired to give their best for him, not merely because he’s friendly but because he maintains a line that ensures accountability. Ben Stokes is the type of leader who isn’t afraid to call out underperformance, fostering both admiration and discipline.
At the same time, Nasser Hussain cautioned Ben Stokes to avoid taking on too much, particularly warning against overexerting himself with the ball. Nasser Hussain admitted that England is a noticeably weaker team without their captain Ben Stokes in peak condition. With major assignments ahead, including the high-voltage Ashes in Australia later this year, England needs Ben Stokes firing with both bat and ball. Nasser Hussain believes that rediscovering his sublime 2019 form could make a decisive difference in the outcome of these iconic series.
In Nasser Hussain’s view, Ben Stokes’ tactical sharpness, willingness to lead from the front and ability to foster team spirit without compromising authority are central to England’s chances against powerhouses like India and Australia. As the series begins, the spotlight will be firmly on Ben Stokes, not just as a cricketer but as the emotional and strategic cornerstone of the English Test side.
