IPL 2026- Mumbai Indians Might Release These Players Before IPL Auction

As the IPL’s retention deadline (Nov 15) nears, Mumbai Indians face the familiar tug-of-war between keeping experience and creating space for fresh talent. Several outlets and pundits have suggested a handful of names who could be released before the 2026 mini-auction, not as blunt judgments on ability but as pragmatic moves franchises often make to manage budgets and squad roles.

Here’s a look at the players most often mentioned, what they did for MI and why their futures with the franchise appear uncertain:

1. Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Afghanistan):

Mujeeb Ur Rahman joined Mumbai Indians as an injury replacement during the 2025 season and brought international T20 experience to the spin bench. He had not been bought in the 2025 auction but was later added to cover for a sidelined overseas seamer. His international résumé includes close to 50 T20Is but limited IPL game time and squad depth in spin options have put his name on release lists.

2. Reece Topley (England):

Reece Topley has been one of the outsiders in discussions about exits. The England left-arm quick featured sparingly for MI in 2025, reports note he played very little that season and with a strong seam battery already in place, selectors might prefer to free his slot for a young Indian pacer who offers longer-term value. That lack of opportunity, rather than ability, has driven speculation about his release.

3. Robin Minz (India):

Robin Minz is a young wicketkeeper-batter bought by MI in 2025 and he made his IPL debut that year. While he showed promise, his appearances were limited and franchises often release young domestic picks if they need purse space or a different role-player profile. His future may hinge on whether MI prioritise another Indian keeper-batter or back his development.

Other names that appear frequently in preview pieces are Karn Sharma and Lizaad Williams. Karn returned to MI in 2025 as an experienced leg-spinner who has a long IPL history and useful match moments but age and a crowded spin unit make his place less secure. Lizaad Williams, a quick who was ruled out by injury in 2025, faces the hardest challenge — injury setbacks reduce immediate utility and teams sometimes release injured overseas players to free funds.

All such lists are speculative until franchises submit official retention choices. For Mumbai Indians, the calculus will balance recent form, squad composition, the final auction purse and long-term planning.
