There are few players in world cricket who command respect across generations and Virat Kohli is one of them. His passion, intensity and relentless pursuit of excellence have made him a defining figure of the modern game. But as the Indian star enters the later stages of his career, questions about his longevity and future naturally arise. Amidst the debate, one of his closest friends and cricketing contemporaries, AB de Villiers has come forward with words of reassurance and admiration.
The South African legend believes that Virat Kohli still has plenty of cricket left in him and that fans should focus on celebrating his contribution rather than worrying about how long he will continue. Speaking on his YouTube channel, AB de Villiers says that Kohli’s journey deserves gratitude and support, regardless of when he decides to call time on his international career. He emphasised that the Indian star has changed the sport in ways few others have, inspiring millions around the world through both his performances and his professionalism.
AB de Villiers shared that he envisions the 2027 ODI World Cup as a potential final chapter in Virat Kohli’s international story. He believes that while the former Indian captain could continue playing for several more years, that tournament might serve as a natural farewell to his remarkable one-day career. The IPL, however, is a different matter, ABD expects Kohli to continue featuring in the T20 league for a few more seasons, given its shorter format and manageable schedule.
He explained that preparing for a World Cup requires immense physical and emotional energy, something that takes a toll over time. Beyond the field, AB de Villiers also acknowledged Virat Kohli’s growing focus on family and balance in life, an aspect the Indian star has often spoken about. According to him, this balance will be key as Virat navigates the final stretch of his playing career.
AB de Villiers also spoke about the intangible impact Virat Kohli continues to have within the Indian team. Even when he doesn’t score big, his presence, attitude and intensity inspire younger players to raise their game. ABD described this influence as “irreplaceable”, highlighting how leaders like Virat Kohli contribute not just through runs but through the belief they instill in those around them. He says that the younger generation benefits immensely from simply sharing the dressing room with someone of Virat’s stature.
While Virat Kohli faced criticism earlier in the recent Australia series for a slow start, he silenced doubters in the final ODI with a composed 74 that helped India secure a commanding nine-wicket victory. AB de Villiers urged fans to remember performances like these and appreciate the journey of a player who has already given so much to the game.
As Virat Kohli prepares for India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa next month, AB de Villiers’ words serve as both a reminder and a celebration, that greatness deserves patience, respect and gratitude. For cricket fans, the story of Virat Kohli is not winding down just yet, it’s simply entering its next beautiful chapter.
