Even after eight long years, fans continue to hope that Disha Vakani will one day return to the show. Now actor Sharad Sankla, who plays Abdul in the beloved sitcom, has shared an honest update which sheds light on why that comeback still feels uncertain.
Sharad Sankla recently gave an interview in which he openly spoke about Disha Vakani’s prolonged absence. When asked whether viewers can expect her return anytime soon, he admitted that while nothing can ever be ruled out completely, it does not seem likely at this point. He explained that the show’s producer Asit Kumarr Modi has always believed in holding on to the original cast and never wants actors to leave. Despite that, reality has its own challenges.
Sharad pointed out that Disha stepped away from the show nearly eight years ago, yet Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah continues to run successfully. At the same time, he acknowledged that audiences have been missing Dayaben every single year since her exit. According to him, this long wait shows how deeply the character is loved, not just by viewers but also by Asit Modi himself. He added that if Disha ever returns, it would be wonderful but if she doesn’t, the makers will have to find another way forward.
He further shared that Asit Modi genuinely wants Disha Vakani to reprise her iconic role. However, what is happening in her personal life and what choices she makes are things no one else can decide for her. Sharad stressed that everyone has their own journey and fans naturally want the original Dayaben back because of the emotional connection they share with the character.
Sharad also addressed the possibility of replacing Disha Vakani. He admitted that bringing in a new actor to play Dayaben would always come with uncertainty. There is no guarantee that the audience would accept someone new the same way they embraced Disha. He explained that Disha brought something truly special to the role, crafting Dayaben’s personality with great skill. In real life, she is very different — her voice, tone and mannerisms were all part of her performance as a trained stage actor. He also mentioned that Mayur Vakani, who played her on-screen brother, is her real-life sibling, which added to the authenticity of their bond on screen.
For those unaware, Disha Vakani went on maternity leave in 2018 and never returned to the show. Over the years, speculation about her comeback has surfaced repeatedly. In December 2024, Asit Kumarr Modi confirmed in an interview that Disha would not be returning.
Asit Modi shared that life changes significantly for women after marriage and motherhood, and balancing work, children and home can be extremely challenging. Despite this, he said that he still holds on to hope. He believes that if circumstances allow and a miracle happens, Disha could return. If not, he accepts that the show may eventually need a new Dayaben.
