As debates swirl around AR Rahman’s recent comments, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has stepped forward to defend the legendary composer, urging people to look beyond headlines and understand the context. Imtiaz Ali, who has worked closely with AR Rahman on several films including Amar Singh Chamkila, believes the controversy is the result of misinterpretation rather than intent.
Speaking openly, Imtiaz Ali said that after spending years in the film industry, he has never experienced or witnessed any form of communal bias. He described AR Rahman as one of the most thoughtful and enlightened individuals he has met, adding that the comments being attributed to the composer do not reflect what was actually said or meant. According to Imtiaz Ali, AR Rahman’s words have been taken out of context, creating an impression that does not align with the person he knows.
The director’s support comes at a time when AR Rahman has been facing criticism over remarks made during a recent interview, which some sections interpreted as having a communal undertone. In response, AR Rahman clarified his position, reaffirming his deep connection with India and his belief in unity through art. He highlighted his long-standing commitment to celebrating the country’s diversity and shared moments from his career that reflect this spirit.
As part of his response, AR Rahman revisited his powerful rendition of patriotic music performed at a cricket match, a moment that has long symbolised national pride for many Indians. He also spoke about his continued efforts to use music as a bridge across cultures, pointing to multiple projects that focus on inclusion and collaboration.

Over the years, AR Rahman has worked on initiatives that bring together artists from different regions and backgrounds, mentored young musicians and supported platforms that nurture emerging talent. From collaborating with musicians from India’s Northeast to guiding orchestras made up of underprivileged children, his work consistently reflects a belief in shared cultural expression.
Through these creative journeys, including global collaborations on epic projects like Ramayana, AR Rahman has continued to highlight India’s artistic richness. Imtiaz Ali’s message is clear — AR Rahman’s legacy speaks louder than controversy and understanding intent is just as important as hearing words.
