Four matches, four wins – on paper, it couldn’t have started better for India at the T20 World Cup 2026. But as the tournament shifts into the high-pressure Super Eights stage, the real challenge begins. India now gear up to face South Africa in Ahmedabad on Sunday and a win there could almost seal a place in the semi-finals.
Despite the unbeaten run, former India coach Sanjay Bangar believes the team hasn’t quite hit top gear yet.
India’s campaign has had its share of tense moments. In the opening game against USA, the top order crumbled early, leaving captain Suryakumar Yadav to rescue the innings with a brilliant match-winning knock. Against Namibia, India looked ready to post a huge total but suddenly lost wickets in clusters, slowing their charge.
The match against Pakistan in Colombo followed a familiar pattern. Ishan Kishan gave the team a blazing start, setting the tone early. Later, the bowlers stepped up with an outstanding effort to secure a dominant 61-run victory.
In the final Group A clash against the Netherlands, it was Shivam Dube who turned things around. Batting at No. 5, he smashed a fiery half-century after another shaky start, helping India regain control.
Sanjay Bangar summed it up by saying India have made a steady but not overwhelming start. Expectations were extremely high and while the team hasn’t steamrolled opponents, the positive sign is that their peak form may still be ahead. He also highlighted that every squad member has had a chance to play, which keeps the entire group match-ready in case injuries arise later.
However, one concern has crept back into focus — catching. After being sharp in the first two games, India dropped six chances across the next two matches, including against Pakistan and the Netherlands.
Sanjay Bangar feels this is an area that needs immediate improvement. With stronger opponents ahead, India can’t afford to let simple chances slip if they want to stay on course for another world cup title.
