The makers of the mega blockbuster franchise Dhurandhar have finally revealed why they chose Ranveer Singh for the lead role and the reason will surprise you.
The co-producer of the film, Jyoti Deshpande, who is also the CEO of Jio Studios, recently spoke about the casting in an interview. She explained the business logic behind it. She said the film was already very expensive to make, so taking big, expensive actors would have made the film a loss from day one itself.
Talking about the early days of the film, she said she was supporting a film that was totally different and had a kind of cinematic excellence that was never seen before. She said they discussed the film for more than six months and during that time, there were many changes and many versions of the draft and the story.
Explaining the money part, she said they knew the film was costly. She said every single penny had to be visible on the screen. She said they could not do anything safe because it was already an expensive film to shoot. She said if they had also added expensive actors, the film would have become non-viable on the first day itself. So, they wanted real performers instead of so-called stars.
She then said why she thought of Ranveer Singh. She said she had already worked with Ranveer on films like Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani, at a time when he was not such a big star. She said those are still some of her most favourite films of Ranveer Singh. She called him an absolutely outstanding actor who gives his 100%. She went on to say that he completely transforms into a character.
She added that she loves this quality about him that he does not look like Ranveer Singh in the film. She gave examples saying when he has to become Bajirao, he becomes Bajirao, when he has to become Khilji, he becomes Khilji, and when he has to become Gully Boy, he becomes Gully Boy. He transforms fully and does not just play himself.
Jyoti Deshpande also said that Ranveer was not just acting, he was fully involved in the film. She said everyone was involved, starting with Aditya Dhar, and Ranveer Singh, the actor, who gave his all and did nothing else for the entire duration of the film. She said every technician who was part of the film, whether it was cinematography, sound design, editing, everyone was fully involved.
She said they all knew they were making something that had so much purpose and so much heart, something that had never been seen and never been done before. She said it felt like if they don’t do this, they are not alive, they have to do it against all odds. So the film defied everything and she had to keep finding a way to move forward and not stop.
Her bet on Dhurandhar turned out to be right, as the film broke several box office records. Ranveer Singh was also praised a lot for playing the characters of Hamza Ali Mazari and Jaskirat Singh Rangi. Now, Ranveer is getting ready for his next film Pralay, which also stars Kalyani Priyadarshan.
