Behind some of Indian television’s most successful comedy shows is a woman whose own name rarely made the headlines — until now. Producer Preeti Simoes has broken her silence on years of being reduced to a single label: Kapil Sharma’s “ex-girlfriend”.
In a candid new interview, Preeti Simoes opened up about how this tag followed her everywhere, completely overshadowing the work she actually did. Despite being the creative mind behind hit shows like Comedy Nights with Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show, she found herself constantly introduced not as a producer but as someone attached to a famous man’s love life.
Preeti Simoes recalled how, for years, she was known simply as “somebody’s girlfriend” and once she and Kapil parted ways and moved forward with their individual lives, that label just shifted to “somebody’s ex-girlfriend” in every headline. She pointed out that this framing had nothing to do with her actual work and instead reflected a media tendency to attach a well-known name to a story purely to generate clicks, rather than genuine audience interest in that connection.
Preeti Simoes didn’t stop there. She also spoke about how outsiders often jump to conclusions about relationships they know nothing about. According to her, two people who were once romantically involved can go on to be friends or maintain a perfectly professional, respectful relationship — yet the world keeps assigning them permanent labels based on their past.
Preeti Simoes added that people rarely understand what’s really going on between two individuals, whether they’ve stayed close friends or simply kept things cordial in a professional setting. But no matter what, the “girlfriend” or “ex-girlfriend” tag never seems to go away. And when it comes to women specifically, she noted there’s always an unfair assumption that she must have done something wrong for the relationship to have ended.
For those unfamiliar with her work, Preeti Simoes has an extensive career as a television producer, having worked on shows including Aakhri Sach, Dil Diyan Gallan, Comedy Nights with Kapil, The Kapil Sharma Show, Kanpurwale Khuranas, Gangs of Filmistaan, and Sunita Ahuja’s YouTube show.
Meanwhile, Kapil Sharma has been married to Ginni Chatrath since December 2018 and the couple has two children – daughter Anayra and son Trishaan.
