Indian cricket’s administration is about to enter a make-or-break 48-hour window, one that could shape the team’s plans all the way up to the 2027 World Cup. At the heart of it is a crucial conversation between the BCCI and Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the men’s selection committee, over whether his contract will be renewed.
According to a leading sports magazine, tension has quietly been building between BCCI office-bearers and the selection committee for the past two months, something the report described as a kind of “cold war”. Over the next two days, Ajit Agarkar is expected to meet senior BCCI officials to discuss a possible roadmap for extending his role. The board is reportedly optimistic that the issues between the two sides can be resolved and that an extension can still be worked out.
Ajit Agarkar’s current term is due to end this month, although the BCCI does have the option to extend it. If that doesn’t happen, the board would need to find a replacement just a year ahead of the 2027 World Cup in Africa, a tournament that has been the central focus for the selection committee, the coaching staff and board officials alike.
While the report itself doesn’t explicitly connect the dots, the root of the tension between the BCCI and the selection committee appears to trace back to India’s tour of England, with senior batter Rohit Sharma at the center of the storm.
The controversy reportedly began when Rohit was informed by a member of the selection committee that he was no longer part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. This sparked widespread debate and speculation. Rohit was said to be visibly upset by the development and reports even suggested he considered retirement after the third ODI. He is understood to have subsequently approached BCCI officials directly to voice his disappointment over how the situation had been handled.
However, the BCCI quickly moved to present a different narrative. Board secretary Devajit Saikia publicly rejected reports suggesting that the ODI at Lord’s against England would mark Rohit Sharma’s final appearance for India. Devajit Saikia insisted that Rohit remained a regular part of the team and would continue playing for as long as the team management considered him part of their plans.
These conflicting statements only deepened questions about whether the BCCI and the selection committee were truly aligned. The situation escalated further when Ajit Agarkar was noticeably absent, both in person and virtually, from a subsequent review meeting held by the BCCI.
